The ecosystem

Upstream projects offer many possibilities through plugins and free services

Silex is built using three significant open source projects: GrapesJS, 11ty, Gitlab.

When choosing Silex it is important to know what it is built with, because we owe these projects a lot of love, and also because developers can integrate GrapesJS plugins to add new design capabilities, use 11ty plugins to enhance site generation features, liverage Gitlab pages and Gitlab pipelines for custom deployments, thus tailoring Silex to meet specific needs and expanding its functionality significantly.

GrapesJS is an open-source web builder framework that provides the backbone for the Silex interface. It allows users to design web pages visually, using a drag-and-drop interface that is intuitive and accessible even to those without extensive programming knowledge. GrapesJS is versatile and customizable, making it an excellent choice for creating a flexible design platform like Silex, where users can craft responsive web pages using pre-designed blocks and custom styles. Please consider supporting GrapesJs.

11ty (Eleventy) is a simpler, more user-friendly static site generator. It converts templates and content into static HTML, ensuring the websites are fast, secure, and easy to host. In the context of Silex, 11ty handles the generation of the final static site from the designs created in the GrapesJS-based interface. This means users can design with Silex and have their projects built into static sites that are optimized for performance and SEO, without needing the complexities typically associated with dynamic site generators. Please consider supporting 11ty.

Together, these tools empower Silex to offer a no-code solution that balances ease of use with powerful, professional results, making web development accessible to a broader audience while supporting more experienced developers with robust tools for customization and optimization.

GitLab plays a crucial role in the Silex ecosystem, providing tools for hosting, version control, collaboration, and deployment via GitLab Pages. It offers a comprehensive environment where users can manage backups, automate builds, and deploy websites effortlessly. Gitlab also has a SaaS/online version with a generous free plan so that you can host your websites for free, with many options such as custom domains (all free of charge)
